Ryder House in Tunbridge Wells provides safe, welcoming and supportive housing for 37 young men and women aged 16 to 24 [on arrival]; who would otherwise be homeless, in high quality flats in central Tunbridge Wells.
Dedicated Housing Support Workers help every resident [average age 19] to address their individual issues or problems, develop vital personal and life skills; look for training, work and volunteer opportunities; and gain the confidence and skills to live independently but also take their place as a valued member of the wider community.

Around 80 young men and women live at Ryder House each year - since the 2010/11 refurbishment of 24 flats
and extension work during which 13 new flats were developed to meet the needs of homeless young people.  We are grateful to YMCA England Housing for this development which was funded by a £1.3M capital grant from the Homes & Communities Agency.

We are also grateful to HRH The Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO who visited West Kent YMCA to meet residents, apprentices,, staff and supporters and formally open the Ryder House Refurbishment and Extension in October.

For residents, Ryder House is their home.  They are also actively engaged in decision making, running residents's meetings and youth inclusion activities; raising funds for special projects and raising awareness of the needs of other young people in Kent and beyond.  Through their own efforts they have furnished the communal lounge, bought IT equipment and a TV, equipped a small gym and created a welcoming garden area and allotment.  They made hard hitting DVDs highlighting the impact on young people of drugs, alcohol, solvents and peer pressure; and also the aspirations of homeless young people.  They came fourth in the final in a nation-wide photographic competition around "Strong Communities or Broken Society".

Young people in all West Kent YMCA projects are encouraged to gain personal skills, team work experience and personal development on the Duke of Edinburgh Award programme - which we are licensed to deliver.

Like any community Ryder House has to have clear house rules and guidance for the good of all residents and staff.  These are made clear at housing interview and when a new resident moves in.  They are set out in tenancy / licence agreement; house rules and the residents handbook.
The residents help to regularly update and improve their handbook. For a guide to life as a Ryder House Resident you can download a recent version of the Ryder House Resident Handbook HERE
