YMCA TRAINING & EDUCATION - skills for life, work & living - YMCA Horizon

Teaching skills for Life, for Work and for Living.

Image Description

The YMCA HORIZON project works with young people aged 13 to 19 (or up to 25 with SEND = special educational needs or disabilities) enabling them to gain vocational & personal skills with accredited qualifications, helping them back into school, further training, volunteering, apprenticeships or work - in short preparing them for adult life.

We use carpentry & joinery to engage young people & excite them about learning, life after school and their role and potential in the work place. This is backed up by every chance to improve Functional Skills [literacy & numeracy - key to progression in learning & in life] and PSD = Personal & Social Development.

We are blessed with an amazing workshop, well equipped and staffed - our dedicated, experienced, skilled team - a Manager/SENCo, trainers/tutors, mentors / learning support staff - who provide every trainee with a mix of training & education PLUS one-to-one intensive support, building confidence, addressing individual concerns - overcoming barriers to learning [behavioural or emotional issues, or poor literacy & numeracy, or any other issues].

Sport, outdoor trips, community projects carried out by trainees help them develop their team work, collaboration, communication - so they are highly engaged, motivated & prepared for adulthood - skills for life, for work and for living.

Trainees can choose to do a Duke of Edinburgh Award - a programme open to all young people in YMCA West Kent as we are a licensed operator.

Some schools commission us to offer holistic, supportive work-based-learning for pupils who may be at risk of exclusion - they return to their school motivated, engaged, keen to learn having seen vocational pathways that they just hadn't appreciated were possible.

We are proud of the quality of our training, teaching, mentoring, tutoring & pastoral support.  It has been widely recognised by learners, ex-learners, parents, schools, PRUs, special schools, SEN teams, social services and Ofsted.

Contact us to arrange a visit or a taster session, or download, complete and return this form to make a referral to the Horizon project.
